Wilson is a third-generation NHL player; his father, Carey, spent 12 seasons in the League and his grandfather Gerry played three games for the Montreal Canadiens in 1956-57 and was later the Winnipeg Jets team doctor. Part of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, Wilson played in the 2006 and 2007 Under-18 World Championships, winning a gold medal in 2006 and tying for the tournament scoring lead with 12 points in 2007 in leading the United States to a silver medal. At Boston University, Wilson was named Hockey East Rookie of the Year in 2007-08 after scoring 35 points.
