Wilson is a third-generation NHL player; his father, Carey, spent 12 seasons in the League and his grandfather Gerry played three games for the Montreal Canadiens in 1956-57 and was later the Winnipeg Jets team doctor. Part of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, Wilson played in the 2006 and 2007 Under-18 World Championships, winning a gold medal in 2006 and tying for the tournament scoring lead with 12 points in 2007 in leading the United States to a silver medal. At Boston University, Wilson was named Hockey East Rookie of the Year in 2007-08 after scoring 35 points.
He tied for the goal-scoring lead at 2008 World Junior Championship with six and ranked second on the United States with seven points. The Nashville Predators selected Wilson with the No. 7 pick in the 2008 NHL Draft. In 2008-09, Wilson was named the USA Hockey College Player of the Year and the Inside College Hockey Player of the Year. He was one of three Hobey Baker 'Hat Trick' finalists after finishing second in the nation in points (55) and assists (38).
