I was working at a Gamestamp at the time they finally decided to remove the demo kiosk for the NGage from our store. We were told to destroy it since they weren't being collected. I remember that night vividly well. We had to roll it through the rest of the mall after hours, which drew a lot of funny stares from other vendors and employees. Especially since I was trailing the pack with a baseball bat and screwdriver. We knew based on the dimensions of our trash compactor that this thing would not fit into the loading door on the side, but we were determined to try to get that thing in there instead of leaving it next to it. We also had a few employees who had been tired of that eyesore and wanted to get a little catharsis out of this.
Once we arrived by the compactor, the situation quickly turned all Office Space. One employee took the first swing and one of the two NGages departed this world in a brilliant shattering of plastic parts. Everyone except the assailant was quite a bit back since we didn't know whether or not there were batteries in the units (from my memory they did not have batteries). The bat was passed and then the second NGage followed it's brother into sweet oblivion. Unfortunately neither bat nor screwdriver could disassemble the kiosk fully, but we got it malformed just enough to fit snugly into the loading door for the compactor. And I mean that literally: it did not go through, but just kinda stayed in the door.
My manager said that was 'good enough'. Before people gang up and say someone should have taken it, we had explicit instructions from our DM that this needed to be trashed. If anyone took it, it would have cost our jobs and potentially legal action would follow. Just part of the job, though knowing what I know now as a historical archivist, maybe I would have risked it. This was over a decade ago. I somewhat doubt you held such a position, but if you did don't blame yourself. The N-Gage was just too ahead-of-its time and ambitious, and had some hardware design problems that were likely more the fault of R&D and execs than anything.
It had some neat games and I remember being very-impressed with it being a handheld capable of 3D graphics when 2D GBA was still the norm. It could have had a decent chance of being a grown-up's alternative to the GBA if they'd made a model just for playing the games without having to buy a potentially-unwanted cell phone with it and if the DS and PSP hadn't eclipsed its capabilities within the year. I knew that shit brick was going to die Wow, nice attitude!
Your confidence in the product must have made wonders for your work promoting it. It actually was an amazing piece of hardware on all sides, with the only stupid fault (in the first model) being the need to open it up to change cards. Everything else, from the controls and ergonomics (talking on it sideways was a meme, you could hold it just like a regular phone), to the amazing screen, raw power for 3D games and media capabilities was spot on. In terms of hardware and OS it was on the same level as Nokia's top of the line phones (minus lack of camera) but only cost half the price. The reason it failed is sometimes people are too dumb to recognize a great piece of hardware when they see one. There were several factors that caused it's failure that extends well-beyond the scope of just PR and marketing. • It was $300, which was intimidatingly-expensive for either a cell phone or a handheld console in 2003.
